Santa Monica College Kicks Off May Concert Series

April 30, 2012 -- Jazz, opera, choral music and percussion are among the musical offerings on Santa Monica College's May concert schedule, which kicks off Friday at the college's Performing Arts Center.

The concerts are all held at The Broad Stage or the Edye Second Space in the center at Santa Monica Boulevard and 11th Street. The lineup is as follows:

  • The acclaimed Jacques Voyemant Septet will perform modern acoustic jazz that features adventurous compositions, virtuosic trombone playing and the musical artistry of some of LA’s top jazz musicians. Friday, May 4 at 7 & 9 p.m. at the Edye Second Space. (Tickets are $10)
  • SMC Opera Theatre & SMC Symphony Presents “Cosi fan tutte,” Mozart's opera buffa about fiancée swapping. The Opera Theatre’s artistic director is Gail Gordon, and the Symphony is under the baton of James Martin. Thursday-Saturday, May 10-12 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, May 13 at 4 p.m at the Broad Stage. (Tickets range from $20 to $35)
  • SMC Chamber Choir Presents “Choral Chestnuts,” featuring Morten Lauridsen’s Dirait-on, Duruflé’s Ubi caritas, Mozart’s Ave verum corpus and more. The Chamber Choir is under the direction of Niké St. Clair. Saturday, May 19 at 2 & 4 p.m. at the Edye Second Space. (Tickets are $10)
  • SMC music professor Dr. Yulia Krasny will present a lecture-concert Music & Art of Ciurlionis featuring visual art and the U.S. premiere of selected musical works by Lithuania’s most prominent painter-composer, Mikalojus Konstantinas Ciurlionis. Saturday, May 19 at 7:30 p.m. at the Edye Second Space. (Free; complimentary tickets available in the SMC Music Office in the Performing Arts Center, Room 211)
  • SMC Concert Chorale Presents “. . .of Love and Loss.” Under the baton of Jeffe Huls, the concert will feature the Liebeslieder Waltzes of Johannes Brahms. Sunday, May 20 at 4 p.m. at the Broad Stage. (Tickets are $10)
  • Under the direction of Dr. Yulia Krasny, the SMC Piano Ensemble Recital will feature advanced students performing a diversity of four-hand piano and piano-duo repertoire. Tuesday, May 29 at 11:15 a.m. at the Edye Second Space. (Free; complimentary tickets available in the SMC Music Office in the Performing Arts Center, Room 211)
  • SMC Percussion Ensemble will present a variety of styles of percussion music in a recital under the direction of Matthew Altmire. Thursday, May 31 at 11:15 a.m. at the Edye Second Space. (Free; complimentary tickets available in the SMC Music Office in the Performing Arts Center, Room 211)
