April 25, 2012 -- The Santa Monica Bike Center, the largest such facility in the nation, has won the League of American Bicyclists Silver Bicycle Friendly Business (BFB) award.

Opened November 18, the $2 million, 5,300-square-foot bike center provides more than 350 secure bike parking spaces, showers, lockers, bike rentals, tours, bike education programs and a staffed repair center.

“Santa Monica Bike Center is at the forefront of a movement to make American businesses more competitive, sustainable and attractive to the best and brightest employees,” said Andy Clarke, President of the League of American Bicyclists. “An investment in bicycling enhances employee health, increases sustainability and improves the bottom line.”

The Santa Monica Bike Center was created by the City of Santa Monica, with funding from METRO, to "support and encourage people to ride bicycles in the City, especially to commute, connect to regional transit and the Exposition Light Rail, now under construction," City officials said.

“The Bike Center is committed to promoting bicycling as a healthy, efficient and cost effective mode for daily trips and we hope our BFB Silver Award will inspire other businesses in the community to become more bicycle friendly,” said Ron Durgin, the center's general manager.

The center had signed up some 130 members at the start of the month, according to Durgin.

“The Santa Monica Bike Center was created to promote and encourage bicycling,” said Lucy Dyke, Deputy Director for Special Projects for the City of Santa Monica. “We have had a very positive response from the community since it opened.”

The League will provide a variety of free tools and technical assistance that will help the center become even more bicycle-friendly, Dyke said. The Bike Center will also provide technical assistance to Santa Monica businesses interested in applying for recognition as a Bike Friendly Business.

The League of American Bicyclists represents the interests of America's 57 million bicyclists, including its 300,000 members and affiliates. For more information or to support the League, visit www.bikeleague.org.
