Santa Monica Wins Two Major Tech Awards

By Lookout Staff

April 24, 2012 -- For the 13th consecutive year, Santa Monica has won awards from the Public Technology Institute (PTI) for using cutting edge technology to address local issues.

The beachside city won two first-place Technology Solutions Awards -- one for a mobile website that helps motiorists find available parking spaces, the other for an initiatve that informs residents about major construction projects around the beachside city.

The Mobile Parking Website -- which won in the Geospatial Information Systems (GIS) Category -- uses a real-time parking map in web and mobile formats to zero in on a motorist's location and provide information on available spaces in nearby parking lots.

The real-time parking map also provides the hours of operation, rates and other information for the city’s beach and downtown parking lots. So far 16 of the city’s 33 downtown and beach parking lots are in the system and more will be added in the coming year.

Be Excited Be Prepared -- which won the Public Safety Technology Category -- takes a “high tech, high touch” approach to informing and engaging the community about the progress and impact of construction projects.

The initiative includes a web site -- smconstructs.org -- that features a comprehensive list of current, upcoming and completed projects. Clicking on any of the project names directs users to a page that provides background about the project, a timeline and a “know before you go” section that features any street closures or traffic redirection that visitors should know about.

The site also features an interactive map that allows visitors to click on a part of the city and get a short update, including when a project is slated to start – or be completed – and links to more detailed information.

Last year, Santa Monica won the Citizen-Engaged Communities Designation for excellence in the use of social media, citizen relationship/records management systems, web portal technology, telephony systems, and mobile communications infrastructure.

PTI is a national, non-profit research organization focused on technology and policy trends impacting local governments.
