Santa Monica to Celebrate Earth Day with Beach Cleanups, Puppets and Fish

By Lookout Staff

April 17, 2012 -- This weekend, Santa Monicans can celebrate Earth Day by helping to clean up the city's beaches, joining a billion people worldwide who will demonstrate their appreciation of the planet and call for its protection.

Kids can kick off Sunday's celebration early by taking in a puppet show that highlights nature and the planet Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Children’s Activity Room at the Main Library, 601 Santa Monica Boulevard.

As every year, the centerpiece of Santa Monica's Earth Day celebrations will be the beach clean ups. Heal the Bay’s monthly "Nothin’ But Sand" cleanup takes place from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Santa Monica Beach on Ocean Park.

Participants also can pick up supplies at a beach cleanup station in front of the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium on the Santa Monica pier to clean the area around the century-old landmark Saturday and Sunday between 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

Those who participate in the weekend-long festivities -- which feature special presentations and activities for all ages -- will be admitted free to the aquarium, where they can touch live animals and check the more than 100 species found in the Santa Monica Bay.

Birdie’s Playhouse, the award-winning, upbeat ensemble that features music about wildlife played with a Latin twist, will perform at the aquarium Saturday at 1 p.m.

On Sunday between 1 and 2 p.m., the Aquarium will host an artistic opening featuring artwork and poetry created by students from Santa Monica's PS 1 Pluralistic School. The school’s third- and fourth-grade students’ work will remain on exhibit in the Aquarium’s Dorothy Green Room through May 20.

"Face painting, an arts and crafts activity station, scavenger hunts, marine-themed films and story times, as well as naturalists’ presentations will be ongoing inside the marine science education center both days," aquarium officials said.

Visitors can also check out marine life off the West end of the Pier at a wildlife observation station, equipped with binoculars and field guides.

Saturday's puppet show at the main Library will feature puppeteer Ilene Cohen and her friends.

After the show children will be decorating grocery bags donated by our local Santa Monica Vons store with artwork celebrating the theme of Earth Day.  Children are invited to donate their bags back to Vons and the local community.  This program is recommended for ages 4 and up.
