Santa Monica College Corsair Reaps Top Awards

April 3, 2012 -- The Santa Monica College student newspaper Corsair won 16 statewide awards, including five first-place prizes and awards for General Excellence.

The awards were handed out by the Journalism Association of Community Colleges (JACC) at its 57th annual state convention held in Burbank last month.

More than 550 students from almost 50 community college journalism programs participated in the event, which also featured on-the-spot writing and photography contests and professional workshops.

Both the print and online Corsair news site were honored by with General Excellence awards, and Michael Yanow was named Student Photojournalist of the Year

First-place awards were given to Yanow for Sports Photo, Patricia de Borba for Video Journalism, Chris Alves for Feature Photo, and Paul Alvarez for News Photo. In addition, Andy Riesmeyer won the Wayne Overbeck Free Speech Video contest and was awarded a $200 prize.

The Corsair print and online news site are produced by SMC students from two journalism classes that are advised by Saul Rubin and Gerard Burkhart.

JACC is a non-profit educational corporation dedicated to community college journalism located in California. It is run by an elected board of directors who represent both students and faculty from around the state.
