September 19, 2011 -- The life of civic leader and activist Millie Rosenstein will be celebrated Saturday afternoon at The Broad Stage in Santa Monica.

Rosenstein died in August at the age of 96, leaving her son, former Mayor Paul Rosenstein, his wife, Ada Hollie, and her daughter, Fran Alexander, and her daughter's husband, Don.

“Millie touched all our lives with her youthful exuberance, constant optimism and activism as she worked to better the human condition,” said her son, Paul.

Millie Rosenstein and her husband Herman moved to Los Angeles from New York with their two small children in 1958.

After moving to Santa Monica in 1980, Rosenstein became active in a host of civic groups, dedicating herself to improving the community in which she lived, particularly the life of its senior citizens.

For over 30 years, she was an active member of Santa Monicans for Renters’ Rights and played a role in its last nominating convention.

For eight years, Rosenstein was President of the Santa Monica Democratic Club, and was recognized in 2000 by then-Assemblywoman Sheila Kuehl as the 41st Assembly District's Woman of the Year.

She volunteered for Tom Hayden when he was the district's State Assemblymember, and for radio station KCRW.

Rosenstein also worked tirelessly on the Martin Luther King Westside Coalition, the Commission on the Status of Women, the Social Services Commission and the Commission for the Senior Community, which she chaired and from which she participated on the Executive Council of Santa Monica College’s Emeritus College as a liaison.

The celebration of Millie Rosenstein's life will take place on Saturday, September 24 at 3 p.m. at the Broad Stage at 1310 11th Street in Santa Monica.

Her family requests that donations in her memory be made to organizations that promote peace, justice, equality and the preservation of the planet.
