By Lookout Staff September 9, 2011 -- In memory of the victims of 9/11, four Santa Monica fire departments will hold a public memorial Sunday. The terrorist attacks ten years ago at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania killed 2,977 people. Of those who died, 343 were firefighters, 60 were police officers and 8 were EMT/Paramedics. Five people with connections to Santa Monica lost their lives. The Santa Monica Fire Department conducts a brief and solemn remembrance ceremony annually to honor those who perished on that tragic day. This year, an artifact from the Ground Zero site will be on display on the second floor of the Public Safety Building at 333 Olympic Boulevard, in front of the Santa Monica Fire Department's administration office. The public, city employees, and neighbors of Santa Monica's community fire stations are invited to gather at one of the following fire stations. The ceremony will begin promptly at 6:45 a.m. and should last no longer than 20 minutes. Station 1, 1444 7th Street; |
