October 25, 2011 -- It's no trick. Santa Monica Farmers Market shoppers will be treated to some special deals on pumpkins this Halloween season.

The fun begins Wednesday at the Downtown Farmers Market, with an all-you-can carry pumpkin patch at Second Street and Arizona Avenue.

Budget-minded Halloweeners will be able to walk away with as many of the locally-grown bright orange gourds as their body can handle for only five dollars.

Pumpkin carriers can use their arms, shoulders, head, teeth – whatever. All that matters is that they transport their load in one trip down a 25-foot runway. After that, they're home free.

It's hard to tell who will have more fun: the pumpkin carriers or the onlookers. Costumes are welcome.
The all-you-can-carry event begins at 8:30 a.m. and lasts until 1:30 p.m. or until all the pumpkins are gone.

The fun continues during the weekend with free pumpkin decorating for kids at the Virginia Avenue Park and Main Street Farmers Markets.

Children will get a free pumpkin which they can adorn with glitter, goggly eyes and other decorations to create a Halloween masterpiece.

The decorating events will be Saturday at the Virginia Park Farmers Market and Sunday at the Main Street Farmers Market. Both events will begin at 10 a.m. and last until 1 p.m. or until all the pumpkins are gone.

Internationally known for its high-quality, fresh, locally-grown produce, Santa Monica's Certified Farmers Markets receive an estimated 900,000 shoppers each year.

Santa Monica's first Farmers Market opened Downtown in 1981 with other Farmers Markets throughout the city following in the years shortly thereafter.
