By Lookout Staff July 15, 2011 – Thanks to Carmageddon, locals will have the beach to themselves this weekend, and there will be plenty to do in Santa Monica within the range of a bus or bike ride. Scavenger hunters will have less competition as they search the Pier and Palisades Park for answers to clues like what did the Terminator and Forrest Gump have in common? And when did the scantily clad California Girls take over the beach? It's all part of the Twilight Treasure Hunt to be held on Friday and Saturday. To register, go to the event's website. Teams will need to bring a digital camera to verify their findings and prizes will be awarded to the winners. The Ocean Park Surf and Skate Club is holding its Ocean Park Luau & Surf Contest sponsored by Santa Monice REI this Saturday at Lifeguard Tower 26. A surf competition and a hula show will be features of the all-day party and a hand-shaped surfboard by April Newman of Ape Shapes will be raffled off, along with other goodies. Advanced registration is required for the surf competition at the event's website. As always, the swimming pool at the Annenberg Community Beach House will be open. In addition, adult beach volleyball and stand-up paddleboarding are on for Saturday, and Sunday, Aqualilies Workshops will offer instruction in synchronized swimming for beginners and more advanced practitioners of the art. For times and details, see the Beach House website. http://www.annenbergbeachhouse.com/activities/cultural-programs-events-and-tours.aspx OK, we don't really want to keep our friends from the San Fernando Valley out of Santa Monica. If they ignore CalTrans warnings and find a way to the westside, Pacific Park on the Pier has a special offer for them. “If guests can make their way to Pacific Park through the detours and stifling traffic, we want to recognize their efforts with a free unlimited ride pass and a free construction cone-colored orange cotton candy,” promised Jeff Klocke, director of marketing and sales at Pacific Park on the Santa Monica Pier. Vals will have to prove their non-local status by showing their zip codes on valid ID. That will guarantee them up to five unlimited ride passes per group, limited to one group redemption per day. After a day at the beach, people can take advantage of a slew of special “Carmageddon” deals at local theatres. The Morgan-Wixson Theatre is offering $15 special price tickets to their production of “Chicago.” The Promenade Playhouse & Conservatory is offering $5 off all tickets to “In Bed with Tenn,” a collection of one-act plays by Tennessee Williams. The Ruskin Group Theatre is offering special $10 tickets to Arthur Miller's “A Memory of Two Mondays.” The Santa Monica Playhouse is offering free tickets to “All Join In - A Fairytale Sing-A-Long Afternoon.” And The Broad Stage is offering a 10% discount to “Zohreh and Manouchehr,” a musical comedy by Iraj Mirza. See www.buylocalmarket.com and www.santamonica.com/405 for more information about weekend deals. |
