August 23, 2011 -- A grocery store clerk died Monday after being attacked in a Santa Monica supermarket. Police have detained the victim’s estranged husband for questioning.

The attack occurred around 3:20 p.m. Sunday at the Alberstsons located at 3105 Wilshire Boulevard, where calls went out to police that a man inside the store was stabbing a female employee.

Upon arrival, police officers found the victim – a 46-year-old woman – with multiple wounds to her neck and torso but still conscious, Santa Monica Police Sergeant Richard Lewis told the press.

The victim was transported to a local hospital where she died less than 12 hours later at around 2:30 a.m. Monday morning, Lewis said. The victim’s name has been withheld pending notification of relatives.

Shortly after the crime, Santa Monica Police began looking for victim’s estranged husband, Kelvin Green, 52, of Los Angeles. Green was apparently found sometime Monday. He is now being detained by Santa Monica police, Lewis confirmed. While no charges have yet been filed against Green, he is being considered by investigators to be a “person of interest,” Lewis said. A preliminary police investigation of the crime indicates that the victim was working at a check stand when the suspect approached her from behind, and began hitting and stabbing her about the head, neck and upper body.

Following the attack, the suspect fled down Berkeley Street toward Wilshire Boulevard, according to investigators.

Witnesses described the suspect as a Male, Black, 6’1” to 6’3”, weighing 220 pounds or more, wearing a light grey hooded sweatshirt. Witnesses described the suspect’s vehicle an older model gold Cadillac.

Green is an African American male, 6’3” tall, who weighs 270 pounds and drives a 1998 gold Cadillac, according to a description and photograph released Sunday by Santa Monica Police. An anonymous tipster helped lead police to Green, Lewis told the Lookout.
