|
By Lookout Staff August 30, 2010 -- Buildings and food are the topics of this fall's "Environmental Issues Lecture Series" at Santa Monica College. The series kicks off September 7 with "Making Santa Monica College More Sustainable." It's a topic that hits home. SMC’s Center for Environmental and Urban Studies incorporates green building materials and the college is a leader in the recycling of food waste. The school also provides in-kind services for Sustainable Works, a non-profit environmental education organization funded by the City and is a champion of public transportation. The lineup for the rest of the fall semester is: * Oct. 19: "Building and Living Los Angeles: Past, Present, and Future" * Nov. 2: "Your Food, Your City, Your Health" * Nov. 30: "What is Sustainable Seafood?" The lectures are at 6:30 p.m. in Room 123 of SMC's Bundy Campus, 3171 S. Bundy Drive, adjacent to Santa Monica Airport. They are free and seating is on a first-arrival basis. Parking is also free. The series is sponsored by SMC's Center for Environmental and Urban Studies. The center - which is open to the public -- features displays, a library and information center, video collection, native garden, and other services and activities related to environmental and urban studies. SMC has been offering courses in environmental and urban studies since fall 2001. For information, call (310) 434-4743 or go to
