|
By Lookout Staff August 4, 2010 -- She's been nominated for a slew of Grammys, seen an anthology of her music released, suffered writer's block and even been the voice of Pinocchio. Rickie Lee Jones and her band, featuring a full horn section, takes the stage at the fourth twilight dance concert of the season at the Santa Monica Pier Thursday. Best known for her hit "Chuck E.'s in Love," Jones received five Grammy nominations for her first self-titled album in 1979. One of the unique musical artists of the past 30 years, Jones is a natural in a number of genres -- folk, rock, jazz, soul, spoken word and pop. Jones, who once described her family as "lower-middle-class-hillbilly-hipster," shot onto the scene, winning Best New Artist and gracing the cover of Rolling Stone twice in 18 months. Her most recent releases are The Sermon on Exposition Boulevard (2007), on which Jones and her collaborators put Christ's words into a modern-day context, and her newest album, Balm in Gilead. The concert begins at 7 p.m. Parking near the pier is limited, so walk, bike or take the Big Blue Bus. Bike valet will be available on concert nights, ready to provide safe, secure and convenient parking for thousands of bikes.
