By Lookout Staff

McKinley Elementary School this week was named a California Distinguished School by the State Board of Education as part of the California School Recognition Program. The honor also went to Point Dume Marine Science and Webster elementary schools in Malibu.

The Distinguished School Award is in its 24th year. Schools were identified for eligibility on the basis of their Academic Performance Index and Adequate Yearly Progress results, which are the state and federal accountability models. The applicants were also identified by their successes in narrowing the achievement gap between higher-performing and lower-performing students.

“We are extremely proud of our staff for demonstrating educational excellence for all students and progress in narrowing the achievement gap,” Superintendent Tim Cuneo said in a press release issued by the District.

“The principal, teachers and staff are to be commended for their hard work and dedication to the success of all students.”

“Our McKinley community is exceptionally proud today,” said McKinley Principal Irene Gonzalez. “McKinley students bring so much enthusiasm and love for learning. Teachers and staff are innovative and passionate about their profession and know that great teaching leads to successful students. This recognition is due to the collaboration of students, staff and families.”

Earlier this year, Gonzalez was named Elementary School Principal of the Year for this region by the by the Association of California School Administrators.
