Author to Discuss Environmentally Friendly Diets

By Lookout Staff

April 8, 2010 --Industrial agriculture’s role in today’s climate crisis and ideas for everyday actions people can take to combat hunger and climate change will be among the topics during a presentation tonight at the Santa Monica Library.

Anna Lappé, author of “Diet for a Hot Planet: The Climate Crisis at the End of Your Fork & What You Can Do About It,” will discuss her book with Mary Sue Milliken, chef and Owner of Border Grill Santa Monica and Border Grill Truck.

The event is sponsored by the City’s Office of Sustainability and the Environment and several other groups. It is taking place to honor Santa Monica being the first City to sign on to the Cool Foods Pledge Campaign. This program seeks to educate people about how consumption of different foods affects the environment.

The City says the top five things one can do to eat more environmentally friendly is eat organic, reduce meat and dairy consumption, avoid processed foods, buy locally grown foods and say no to packaging. More information about the campaign can be found at www.coolfoodscampaign.org.

A reception with vegetarian snacks will follow the event.

The program will begin at 7 p.m. and is free. Seating is limited and will be available on a first arrival basis. Tickets will be released at 6:30 p.m. One ticket is allowed per guest and guests must be present to receive a ticket.
