April 5, 2010 -- James Stellar, a 48-year-old Santa Monica resident, was killed on Friday afternoon when his vehicle was broadsided by another car on Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu near Broad Beach Road.

The driver of the other car was David Corona, 19, of Oxnard. Lt. Scott Chew of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said Corona‘s car hit Stellar’s vehicle at approximately 4:15 p.m. while Stellar attempted to turn onto Broad Beach Road from PCH.
“It appears they (investigators) think Corona might have fallen asleep,” Chew said.

Chew said he had no information about whether charges would be filed. He advised contacting the Sheriff’s Department on Monday.

About 24 hours later, a Malibu High School student was killed approximately four miles from the scene of Stellar’s death in an unrelated collision. According to
a press release from the Sheriff’s Department,

13-year-old Emily Shane was killed when a car hit her while she was walking along PCH to a friend’s house.

After hitting Emily, the Mitsubishi Lancer being driven by 26-year-old Sina Khankhanian of Winnetka struck a power pole and overturned.
“Preliminary investigation at the scene suggested that the driver, Sina Khankhanian, may have deliberately caused the vehicle to crash,” the press release stated.

The suspect was detained at the scene and later booked at the Malibu Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station for murder.

Emily was a popular person in Malibu. At least two memorial Facebook pages have been created for her. Mourners have posted numerous comments on the pages. They refer to Emily a “kind” and “fun” person.

“Really good person, not one bad thing in her,” one poster wrote.
