Woman Runs Herself Over, Dies

By Lookout Staff

May 29, 2009 – A female motorist was killed in Santa Monica Thursday when she was run over by the empty car she was trying to fix, police said.

The 56-year-old woman’s car had stopped near the intersection of 11th Street and Pearl Street at around noon, police said. The car seemed to have a mechanical problem with the starter.

“She crawled under the front of the car and started it by touching the starter solenoid with a screwdriver,” said Sgt. Jay Trisler, the Police Department spokesman.

The vehicle, which was left in drive and the emergency brake off, rolled forward and onto the woman, Trisler said.

“She was dragged a short distance and run over by the right front wheel,” he said.

The woman was treated at the scene by the Santa Monica Fire Department and transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with additional information should call Traffic Investigator Chris Dawson at 310.458.8954 or the Watch Commander at 310.458.8427 (24 hours).
