August 20, 2009 -- Venice's soaring four-part harmonies and the electric blues of Lukas Nelson & The Promise of the Real will be featured in a free Twilight Dance Series concert at the Santa Monica Pier Thursday night.
David Crosby called them "the best vocal group in America." Jackson Browne called them "quintessentially Californian" and "one of my favorite bands."
Venice has been winning over fans with their soaring harmonies and folk sounds since forming in 1977 and have become a favorite at the Twilight Dance Series.
"Venice is the best vocal group in America right now," said Crosby, a member of the legendary folk-rock groups the Byrds and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. "They're better than anybody else I know.
"I’ve been telling people about them since the first night I heard them. I’ve told everybody I could find that they were the best. This is my favorite band in the world.”
Sharing the bill with Venice is Lukas Nelson & The Promise of the Real plays music that is a throwback to earlier guitar-driven classic rock artists such as Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Neil Young, and the Grateful Dead.
The concert run from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. in the pier parking lot (on the pier) and is free. No alcohol is allowed. Dogs are allowed as long as they are on a leash.
Guests are more than welcomed to bring their own seating but seats will be available for rental.
