Dave Alvin & the Guilty Women Take the Pier Stage Thursday Night

By Lookout Staff

August 6, 2009 -- LA rock and roots music legend Dave Alvin will bring his new all-female band of virtuosos to the Santa Monica Pier for a free concert Thursday night. Sharing the bill with Dave Alvin & the Guilty Women is Paul Thorn, billed as the "Poet and Prophet of the Unheard."

Alvin, who founded The Blasters with his brother Phil, started his new band as a one-off performance at a bluegrass festival last fall, after having played with several Guilty Women in the past.

Alvin was confident the chemistry would be right. At the concert, Dave Alvin & the Guilty Women -- comprised of Sarah Brown, Cindy Cashdollar, Amy Farris, Nina Gerber, Laurie Lewis, Christy McWilson and Lisa Pankratz -- blazed through their set, surprising each other at every turn. www.davealvin.net/

“It just felt so natural,” says Alvin. “It was like I had been playing with them for a
hundred years.”

"I knew that they were all master musicians who could easily handle any sort of song I could throw at them," he says. "And that's exactly what they did and they did it effortlessly and beautifully.”

The opening act will be Paul Thorn, who, like Elvis, hails from Tupelo, Mississippi. Using his brand of blues, country, gospel, R & B, and rock 'n' roll, Thorn is a natural-born storyteller.

“A Long Way from Tupelo,” his newest record, is a collection of songs that illustrates Thorn’s versatility and authentic connection to the music of the Mississippi heartland. www.paulthorn.com

The concert run from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. in the pier parking lot (on the pier) and is free. No alcohol is allowed. Dogs are allowed as long as they are on a leash.

Guests are more than welcomed to bring their own seating but seats will be available for rental.
