Red Cross Sees Green

April 2 -- The Santa Monica Red Cross raised nearly $150,000 during its annual "Red Tie Affair" Saturday at the Fairmont-Miramar Hotel.

More than 400 people attended the gala dinner, which recognized local heroes for their volunteerism and extraordinary service to the community.

In addition to paying an entrance fee, attendees bid for designer watches, exotic vacations, limited edition wines, art, sports and Hollywood memorabilia, designer dresses and jewelry.

The Red Tie Affair gala honors “the humanitarian spirit of those who have shown courage, exhibited unselfish character and whose work has saved lives and/or improved the human spirit,” Red Cross officials said.

This years Red Tie honorees included the cast and crew of the new, top-rated, CBS daytime television show, "The Doctors." The show's executive producer, Jay McGraw, accepted the chapter's Spirit Award for the show's contribution to the everyday understanding of medicine and health issues.

Others honored were Russ Kino, MD, FACEP, FACEM, CEO of Saint John's Emergency Specialists, won the Rick Crocker Spirit of Volunteerism Award;

The Santa Monica - UCLA Medical Center and Orthopaedic Hospital, Nethercutt Emergency Center and Saint John's Health Center Emergency Department also received a coveted Spirit Award.

The American Red Cross of Santa Monica, is a publicly supported, 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation that provides health and safety education, youth services, blood services, CPR and first aid training, disaster awareness and disaster relief efforts.
