January 29 -- State Assembly member Julia Brownley,
who represents Santa Monica, was appointed to chair a key budget
subcommittee on education finance last week.
A former School Board member, Brownley has now been appointed
by Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez to the Committees on Aging and
Long-Term Care and Budget, and the budget subcommittee on resources,
education and natural resources.
“I especially wanted the Education Committee,” said
Brownley, who served 12 years on the Santa Monica/Malibu school
board. “It’s a dream list of assignments and perfect
for the 41st Assembly District.
The Committee on Aging will deal with how California meets the
challenges of a population that is living longer, Brownley said.
“I couldn’t be more thrilled or honored by the Speaker
to have the opportunity to serve on these committees,” Brownley
said. “These issues have been my passion, and led me to
run for the Assembly.
“The Budget Subcommittees on Education and Resources give
me the chance to be hands-on with the Governor’s budget
proposals for these two critical issues, item by item, line by
line, and working to make the investments that are needed for
the longer term,” Brownley said.
Assembly policy and budget committees will be meeting over the
next several months.
The state budget bill must by passed by the Legislature by midnight
on June 15. September 14 is the last day for all other bills to
be passed out of the Legislature.
