Fire Shutters Pedals on the Beach

September 26 -- A kitchen fire erupted at a Santa Monica beachfront hotel Saturday afternoon, forcing restaurant and lobby patrons to evacuate, although no injuries were reported, Fire Department and hotel spokespersons said.
Fire fighters rushed to Shutters On the Beach Hotel at 1 Pico Boulevard shortly after alarms went off at 12:07 p.m., Captain Dale Hallock of the Santa Monica Fire Department said.
The fire started in a ground-level restaurant on Ocean Front walk then spread upward through ventilation ducts, Hallock said.
Ultimately eight units composed of 24 firefighters responded to the scene before leaving nearly six hours later, he said.
Although it is not yet known how widespread the damage is, preliminary reports suggest the cost of the fire to be in the neighborhood of $250,000, Hallock said.
While the fire appears to be accidental, further investigation is underway to determine the exact cause, Hallock said.
Saturday’s fire at Pedals restaurant forced temporary closure of the hotel lobby and another restaurant upstairs, but guests in the adjoining hotel were mostly undisturbed, Shutters spokesperson Marjory Hawkins said.
“It was very well contained and the fire department did a great job,” Hawkins said.
The hotel’s lobby reopened less than a day after the fire, and the adjoining restaurant -- One Pico -- will resume service Monday, Hawkins said. But it is still too early to tell when Pedals will reopen.
