The Pico Neighborhood at a Glance
As part of the City's planning project for future City services called
"Community Voices," RAND Corporation researcher Lee Mizell wrote
"The City of Santa Monica: A Community Profile." The following
information on the Pico Neighborhood, which encompasses Zip Code 90404
and parts of 90405, is from that report.
- Approximately 60 percent of the approximately 90,000 people currently
living in Santa Monica reside in the 90404 and 90405 areas.
- Approximately 13 percent of Santa Monica residents live in poverty.
Twenty two percent of them live in the Pico Neighborhood.
- While the 1998 median household income in the 90402 area (North of
Montana) was $89,000 the median income that same year in the Pico Neighborhood
was less than $30,000
- African Americans and Latino residents are concentrated in the 90404
and 90405, while Whites and Asians are more evenly dispersed.
- While nine percent of Whites live in poverty, 10 percent of Asians,
24 percent pf of African Americans and 29 percent of Latinos live in
poverty.
- The bulk of the City's youth live in the 90404 and 90405 areas, with
37 percent of teens living in the Pico Neighborhood.
- The largest percentage of female-headed households with children under
18 live in the Pico Neighborhood and the Ocean Park Neighborhood.
- Of the six percent of Santa Monica residents who use government programs
-- CalWORKS, MediCal, General Relief, Food Stamps or In-Home Support
Services --, 45 percent reside in the Pico Neighborhood.
- Welfare receipt in Santa Monica has declined by 12 percent since countywide
implementation of welfare reform, with much of the decline occurring
in the Pico Neighborhood.
- The incidence of crime among adults has decreased by little more than
50 percent since 1993. Total arrests among juveniles are down 35 percent.
