Closing Fairview Would Be 'A Giant Step Backward'

March 21, 2025

Dear Editor,

More than 20 years ago, a local writers' group, Write Away, was formed at Fairview Library, with weekly gatherings.

Our Write Away sessions, usually drawing 12-18 people, were held on Tuesdays in Fairview's meeting room from noon-2 p.m. Some people came every two or three weeks, meaning that in a month, 25 or more folks were at Write Away.

Our sessions had writers, published or not, read aloud from their projects, getting suggestions or ideas in return. Most people were over 21, though some younger writers came as their time permitted.

Periodically, and with notices in the library newsletter, we'd have public readings in the community room. These events were well-attended and fulfilled the library’s goal of having Write Away do periodic projects.

This years-long pattern was interrupted only by the library's makeover some years ago and the Covid epidemic. Write Away met where it could -– a park, a home -– almost every week.

Our numbers dwindled; without the relationship with Fairview, and the library newsletter, it’s tough to recruit new writers. (Other Fairview-using groups were also displaced).

Closing Fairview, as one councilman recently suggested, would be a giant step backward. Our hope is for full re-opening. Write Away salutes Santa Monica’s Library Board (volunteer citizens) for its support of reopening Fairview Library.

Sincerely,

Brian R. Bland, 45-year resident, Ocean Park/Sunset Park
