Why We Decided to Withdraw from the Race for City Council and Support the Pro-Resident Slate

By Andrew Browning and Dominic Gomez

After much thought, the two of us have decided to withdraw from the race for Santa Monica City Council.

We withdrew because it became clear that the best way to affect change in Santa Monica was to consolidate the number of candidates challenging the incumbents, incumbents who have overseen the rapid decline of our city.

We feel our time and energy is better spent supporting the slate of Santa Monicans for Change: Christine Parra, Oscar de la Torre, Phil Brock and Mario Fonda-Bonardi.

We believe these candidates share our goals of:

• Electing a City Council that is accountable to residents NOT special interests
• Improving public safety
• Ensuring that public spaces are safe and inviting
• Eliminating overdevelopment that displaces renters
• Demanding fiscal responsibility

Go anywhere in Santa Monica and ask yourself: Is our city safer, cleaner, more livable and more affordable than it was 5 or 10 years ago?

We are plagued with significant problems compared to other coastal cities because we have a City Council that is dismissive of resident concerns. We feel the time for CHANGE is NOW.

Because we withdrew after the City’s withdrawal deadline, our names will still appear on the ballot. We regret any confusion and urge you to vote for the pro-resident slate Santa Monicans for Change.
