Unprofessional
and Disrespectful
February 13, 2004
Dear Editor,
On January 22 of this year the Santa Monica-Malibu Board of Education
entertained a motion to establish a task force to look at Olympic
High School. (“School
Board Shoots Down Plan to Explore Shutting Down Olympic High,” January
24, 2004)
I watched the meeting on Santa Monica TV and I have read the numerous
reports in our local papers. I am disappointed in the Board's apparent
reaction. What I perceived as very inappropriate behavior on the
part of the principal was rewarded.
The Board had not anticipated the display and was clearly shocked.
The tone and demeanor of the principal and two of the teachers struck
me as disrespectful, self-serving, and unprofessional.
I am intrigued by the fervor with which these individuals spoke
and curious to know exactly what they are trying to conceal or protect.
These are not the role models I would choose for my children. I
do not want these individuals shaping and guiding the youth of my
community
Many of the students who spoke had clearly been manipulated. Dr.
Susanne Toyryla encouraged them to join in the "group temper
tantrum."
Would it not have been a better idea to lead the school community
through a more peaceful and respectful process of discussion and
dissent? This would have provided a valuable learning experience
and a life lesson.
I look forward to hearing that the evaluation of Olympic High School
will go forward. I think we need to take an objective look at what
our District is doing for the students who attend continuation school.
Perhaps there is a different approach that would provide basic skills
to the students and allow them to have a positive self-image about
themselves and their choices in life.
Surely we owe it to all of our children to provide them with an
education system that ensures their personal dignity and self-respect.
This was a shocking and petulant display of behavior that was unprofessional
and disrespectful. There needs to be a consequence for this display
of anger and it should be swift and clear for all to see.
