Victims of Plane Crash Worked for Air Travel Sites
The two men who died in a fiery crash on the runway at Santa Monica Airport Wednesday evening when their single-engine plane likely lost power were successful Internet entrepreneurs who loved flying and worked for companies specializing in air travel. The pilot, Paulo Emanuele, who is thought to be 46, was the general manager of the airliners.net web site and an “amazing pilot,” according to a statement on the aviation news site he worked for. Martin Schaedel, who never revealed his age but is thought to have been about 23, was a consultant to FareCompare, a web site that compares airline fares, and a frequent flier who routinely logged more than 100,000 miles a year, according to press reports.

Light Rail Officials Release Impact Report
A study of four alternative routes for the proposed Expo Light Rail Line from Culver City to Santa Monica found that following the existing Expo right of way through West Los Angeles to Santa Monica -- rather than diverting the line to Venice Boulevard -- posed the fewest hurdles. The Draft Environmental Impact Report (DEIR) released by the Expo Authority Wednesday also found that once the line hits Santa Monica, the least problematic route would likely travel down Olympic Boulevard to a terminal Downtown.

How Effective Are Middle School
Reading Coaches?

Many middle school students struggle when it comes to developing advanced reading skills. One increasingly common approach for improving literacy skills is to use school-based literacy or reading coaches: trained master teachers who provide leadership for the school’s literacy program and offer onsite and ongoing support for teachers so they can improve their students’ literacy.

But how effective are such coaches? A RAND Corporation study sought to help answer that question by examining a statewide reading coach program in 113 Florida middle schools.
