Police Mark National Night Out with Block Party

August 6 -- To celebrate the lowest crime rate in more than 50 years, the Santa Monica Police Department and Chief Timothy Jackman are throwing a 1950s style block party Tuesday.

The National Night Out party -- from 6 to 8 p.m. in front of the Public Safety Facility – will include entertainment by The Wonderelles, an all female group that will perform a 50s revue, as well as contests and games for the kids. There will also be lots of free food and prizes.

McGruff the Crime Dog, the SWAT Team, and K-9 and Mounted Units will be joined by the Santa Monica Fire Department to meet the community to celebrate the partnerships which make our city safe, according to a statement issued by police.

The first 500 to register at the event will receive free buttons, balloons and flashlights.

Sponsored for the past 24 years by the National Association of Town Watch, National Night Out is a nationwide event staged in more than 11,000 locations to promote a sense of community, strengthen partnerships with police and help fight crime.

The Public Safety facility is located at 333 Olympic Drive. There is plenty of parking at the new Civic Center lot across the street.
