September 17, 2020 -- Santa Monicans don't have to wait until next month's annual Drug Take Back Day to safely dispose of unused or expired prescription medications.

The City and Police Department have installed a permanent medicine disposal drop-off kiosk in front of the main doors to the Public Safety Facility at 333 Olympic Drive, police officials announced.

Prescription Drug Drop-Off Kiosk

The kiosk is available 24/7, 365 days a year, officials said.

"From an environmental perspective, medications thrown in the trash or poured down the drain can end up in landfills or oceans," officials said in a statement.

These disposed medications "have the potential to leach into the soil and contaminate groundwater and aquatic animals."

The program also ensures that potentially dangerous medicines don't fall into the hands of children, according to police.

"The number drug overdoses due to prescription medications has skyrocketed over the years, especially among children," police officials said.

Santa Monicans have relied on National Take Back Day -- which takes place October 24 this year -- to safely dispose of their unwanted medications.

Last year's nationwide drive brought in 882,919 pounds -- almost 442 tons -- of unused or expired prescription medication and vape devices, according to the Drug Enforcement Agency, which sponsors the event.

That brings the total amount of prescription drugs collected by DEA since the program began in 2010 to nearly 12.7 million pounds.

Santa Monica's new disposal kiosk is a collaboration between the Police Department, the Water Resource Protection Division of Public Works and the Office of Sustainability and the Environment.
