Confirmed Coronavirus Cases in Santa Monica Seem to Level Off as County Cases Spike
By Jorge Casuso
March 26, 2020 -- Three new cases of the coronavirus were confirmed in Santa Monica Thursday, as Los Angeles County saw more new cases over a 24-hour period than over the previous three days.
The new cases -- which bring Santa Monica's total to 21 -- come as the County reported 417 new cases between noon Wednesday and noon Thursday.
That compares with 394 new cases over the previous 72 hours, according to data released by County health officials.
Barbara Ferrer, the County's Public Health Director, attributed the rise in confirmed cases to a "huge" increase in the number of tests conducted and a diminishing backlog of test results.
On Wednesday, 4,000 people were tested or received the results of their tests, Ferrer said.
On Thursday, the County reported a one-day rise in the number of deaths from 13 to 21. Health officials did not reveal where the deceased resided.
Two deaths were removed from the total after it was found that one victim did not live in the County, while the precise cause of death for the other has not been determined.
The latest data showed the number of cases reported in Santa Monica holding relatively steady after two cases were reported Wednesday.
By comparison, other areas of the county saw the number of cases continuing to rise.
As if noon Thursday, the Melrose area had 47 confirmed cases, Brentwood had 41, West Hollywood 35, Hollywood 27 and Glendale had 23.
Santa Monica dropped from sixth to seventh in the total number of cases reported for the 135 areas of the County.
Manhattan Beach, Carson and Encino each equaled Santa Monica's total Thursday, with the number of cases in Carson spiking from 9 to 21 over one day, while Encino saw eight new cases.
As of noon Thursday, 253 people had been hospitalized and 141 cases remained under investigation.
