June 3, 2020 -- The Santa Monica Public Library on Wednesday announced plans to safely re-open some of its facilities during the ongoing coronavirus emergency.

As the adapted buildings reopen their doors with altered hours, the number of staff and patrons allowed inside will be limited and social distancing guidelines will be enforced, library officials said.

Cleaning and sanitizing measures will be enhanced and library returns will be "quarantined for a designated period of time."

The libraries also will be adapting “high-touch” services and programming, officials said.

In addition, library staff at the reopened facilities -- the first floor of the Main Library Downtown and the Pico and Montana branches -- will be screened for COVID-19 and outfitted with protective equipment.

The Fairview and Ocean Park libraries will remain closed as part of the City's efforts to make up for a projected $150 million deficit triggered by a coronavirus shutdown.

“The Library is taking a phased approach to ensure the health and safety of our patrons and staff," said Library Director Patty Wong.

"We look forward to providing safe, supportive access to the library’s materials and resources," Wong said. "We are excited to welcome the community back.”

The library will initially reopen the book returns and launch "contactless curbside holds pick-ups" at select library locations, officials said.

The dates for launching those services have not yet been announced.

"Until then, library patrons are asked to keep their checked-out items a little longer," officials said. "No late fees will be assessed during the library closure."

Patrons can still access the library's digital services, which are available 24/7 at smpl.org/online.

These include downloading e-books and e-audiobooks, streaming movies and music and reading digital newspapers and magazines.

Those who need a library card can sign up for a temporary e-card.

Library staff is available Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. To contact staff call 310-458-8600 or email reference@smgov.net.
