February 18, 2020 -- A homeless man has been arrested for attempted homicide in the assault of a man sleeping in a Santa Monica alley early Monday morning, according to police.

Police arrested Kevin Femlin, a 46-year-old transient who lives outside Santa Monica, said Lt. Joseph Cortez, the Police Department spokesperson.

The assault took place before dawn while the victim was sleeping in an alley in Santa Monica's Mid City Neighborhood, police said.

Officers responding to a call around 6 a.m., found the victim, who is in his sixties, in the 1500 block of Alley 12 between Broadway and Colorado Avenue, police said.

Officers found the victim laying on the ground with a blanket, police said.

The victim appeared to have suffered blows to the head and face, Cortez said.

He told officers he had been assaulted in the night while he slept, he said.

The victim was taken to the UCLA – Westwood hospital and remains in stable condition, police said.

"The victim is conscious and talking with investigators," Cortez said.

Police are determining the motive for the assault.

Anyone with information about the assault should call Santa Monica detectives at 310-458-8451.
