October 29, 2019 -- A homeless man who was beaten with a shovel in a Downtown alley last month was Santa Monica's third homicide victim this year.

Joseph Dennis Bongarzone, a 65-year-old white male, was assaulted shortly after midnight on September 19 in the alley behind 4th Street between Broadway and Colorado Avenue, according to police.

The suspect, Jamil Lanier Warren, a 28-year-old black homeless man from Los Angeles, was arrested in the attack, police said.

"It appears that the victim was punched and kicked several times in the face," said Lt. Rudy Flores.

"The suspect also used a shovel to hit the victim in the face causing him to lose consciousness," he said.

"The information that we have is that it appeared to be random. They didn't know each other."

Bongarzone was rushed to Emergency at Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center and placed on life support, Flores said. He was taken off life support on October 2.

According to the LA County Coroner's office, Bongarzone died that day of "traumatic injuries."

On September 24, Warren was charged with attempted homicide, assault with a deadly weapon and mayhem, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorneys office.

"The charges remain as previously filed for now," said Ricardo Santiago, a spokesman for the DA.

The incident marks the third homicide in Santa Monica this year. The other two were an alleged matricide and a fratricide.

In the first incident, which took place between January 23 and 24, Stephen Lloyd Fader allegedly stabbed his parents Sharon Fader, 75, and Howard Fader, 82, multiple times in their Sunset Park home.

Sharon Fader was pronounced dead at the scene ("Man Charged With Killing Mother, Attempting to Kill Father," February 4, 2019).

The second incident took plac on August 25, when Christopher Michael Mondev allegedly shot to death his his 19-year-old brother Charles Edward Mondev ("Santa Monica Man Kills Brother in Dispute Sunday," August 26, 2019).

There were six murders last year; four of them involved homeless individuals.
