Police Arrest Wanted Man After Chase on Land and Water
By Jorge Casuso
July 17, 2019 -- A wanted man was arrested Wednesday morning near the Santa Monica Pier after leading police on a foot chase and trying to swim away.
Jesse Flores, a 26-year-old Hispanic male, was camping under the pier when officers patrolling the area spotted his tent at around 7:50 a.m., police said.
The officers approached the subject, who was violating two municipal codes, said Lt. Saul Rodriguez, a Police Department spokesman.
They conducted a background check and found that Flores had a $150,000 warrant for his arrest for receiving stolen property, Rodriguez said.
Flores took off running and led police on a foot chase before jumping into the water, he said.
"He swam into a marked area that would be dangerous for him as a swimmer," Rodriguez said.
"Life guards and harbor officers swam out and got him."
Flores was led to a patrol cruiser on the pier, where a dozen police officers and harbor patrol officers in swimming trunks were now at the scene.
Aerial footage captured by CBS2 shows the officers struggling to get the underwear-clad Flores into the vehicle.
He pushes on the door the officers are trying to close and when they succeed pops out the other door before they manage to push him back in and close it.
According to Rodriguez, Flores is a "frequent flier," which means "he gets arrested frequently by police."
The arrest record doesn't indicate if Flores is homeless, but Rodriguez suspects he might be.
"You would think he was, camping out on the beach."
