Man Charged With Killing Mother, Attempting to Kill Father

February 4, 2019 -- A son suspected of stabbing his parents in their Sunset Park home was charged with the murder of his mother and the attempted murder of his father, police said Monday.

Stephen Lloyd Fader, 42, remains in custody pending future court proceedings, police said. His bail has been set at $2 million.

"Detectives developed information leading to Stephen Fader as the suspect involved in the crime," said Lt. Saul Rodriguez, the Police Department spokesman.

The stabbings took place January 24 at around 6:23 a.m. inside a single-family home in the 1200 block of Sunset Avenue, police said ("Woman Fatally Stabbed in Sunset Park, Son in Custody," January 24, 2019).

The suspect's mother, Sharon Fader, 75, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the coroner’s office.

Both the suspect and his father, identified as Herman Fader, were transported to a local hospital, where they were treated for stab wounds, police said.

The father was in critical condition with stab wounds to the chest.

The son received stab wounds to the abdomen and was hospitalized for a week under police supervision, police said.

When the suspect was discharged, police booked him on suspicion of murder, Rodriguez said.

The incident marked the first homicide in Santa Monica this year.
