August 15, 2019 -- The Santa Monica Animal Shelter is offering reduced fees for those who adopt pets during this year's “Clear the Shelters” drive Saturday.

The fifth annual event sponsored by NBC4 and Telemundo 52 -- which takes place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 1640 9th Street -- will offer pets for $20 each.

The event "raises awareness about the benefits of pet adoption and aims to reduce the animal overpopulation at local shelters," sponsors said.

Santa Monica Shelter pets

Run by the Police Department's Animal Control Section, the Santa Monica shelter houses both stray and owner-surrendered animals.

They include dogs, cats, rabbits and an occasional bird or reptile, according to the shelter's website.

"If you've lost a pet, or if you're looking to adopt a new one, the city shelter is one of the best places to start your search," shelter officials said.

The shelter offers low-cost spaying/neutering, access to pet veterinary medical records and pet vaccinations, officials said.

Since 2015, "Clear the Shelters" has placed more than 250,000 pets in new homes nationwide.

During the campaign NBC4 and Telemundo 52 will cover news stories to spotlight the issue.

Stories will address the importance of spaying/neutering, the benefits of micro-chipping and helping families find the right pet for their homes, the sponsors said.

Those who adopt can share photos with their pets on social media using the hashtag #Adoptdontshopsm, which will be shared in photo galleries by the two stations.

Those who adopt in Santa Monica can share their photos on the Santa Monica Animal Shelter’s Facebook page with the hashtag #AdoptSantaMonica.

Photos will be posted on photo galleries at www.NBCLA.com and www.Telemundo52.com beginning the week of July 20 through August 15.

To get to the Santa Monica Animal Shelter approach westbound on Olympic Boulevard, turn right at 9th Street and go to the end of a dead-end block.
