August 1, 2019 -- Heart of the City, is the theme of this year's National Night Out celebration in Santa Monica that takes place on Tuesday from 5:30 to 8 p.m. in front of City Hall.

Santa Monica Chief Cynthia Renaud and the members of the Santa Monica Police Department will host hundreds of members of the community to "celebrate the exceptional relationship" they share, police officials said.

The event, held in towns and cities across the U.S., offers residents an opportunity to meet the officers who protect the city, along with their horses and K-9s, and get a first hand look at police vehicles and equipment.

The event features music, community art, free food, and family friendly activities including a photo booth, giant lawn games, Lego heart exchange, Santa Monica Rocks decorating, e-scooter safety demonstrations and more, event organizers said.

"The City of Santa Monica continues to thrive because of its strong neighborhood spirit and active community involvement among neighbors, community groups, businesses and youth organizations," police officials said in a statement announcing the event.

"This event celebrates these efforts and is designed to serve as a reminder to all of the joint power in working together."

The nationwide event has been held annually since 1984 and is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch in the United States and Canada.

National Night Out has blossomed since it was launched as a “take back the streets” call to the public to hold small gatherings. Its first year attracted an estimated 2.5 million residents across 400 communities in 23 states.

Today, attendance for National Night Out has soared to more than 38 million residents in some 16,500 communities across the country, in U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases around the world.

Each community organizes the event, which can range from back-yard barbecues to full-blown festivals. But the goal is the same: To increase awareness about local police programs, neighborhood watch and other anti-crime efforts.

Organizers at this year's Santa Monica event encourage participants to use sustainable transportation, but validated parking will be available in the Civic Center Parking Structure located directly across the street from the Public Safety Building.

Some of the sponsors of this year’s event include the Santa Monica Police Officers’ Association, 7-Eleven, Pacific Park and the Huntley Hotel.
