Santa Monica to Hold First SaMo PRIDE Celebration in June
By Jorge Casuso
April 5, 2019 -- Miles of Santa Monica streets will light up with rainbow colors in June as the city holds its first SaMo PRIDE, a month-long celebration of the LGBTQ+ community.
Hosted by Downtown Santa Monica Inc. (DTSM), the Pier and Santa Monica Place in collaboration with the City, the festivities and programmingc celebrate "individuality, empowerment, and inclusivity within Santa Monica," organizers said.
“Downtown Santa Monica is fueled by the kind, intelligent and creative people that live and work here every day," said Kathleen Rawson, DTSM's chief executive officer.
"As a member of the LGBTQIA community, I am proud of our inclusive, welcoming and progressive community that champions the fundamental human rights of all people.
"It’s time we stand together to celebrate our PRIDE as we continue the fight for equality.”
Mayor Gleam Davis said the celebration reflects the six core values the City Council identified this year -- accountability, equity, inclusion, resilience, safety and stewardship.
“These values are not new to Santa Monica, they are engrained in who we are,” Davis said.
Highlighting the celebration is “Miles of Pride,” a series of light installations that spans "miles of city streets and lights up the sky with a rainbow of colors," organizers said.
The lights will shine every night during the month of June at the Third Street Promenade, Santa Monica Place and at the Pier.
The calendar of events -- which promises to "bring together the Santa Monica community and guests from around the world" -- focuses on "family-friendly art, events and community connection."
"City partners will host food festivals, happy hours, storytelling time for kids, silent discoes and more to celebrate love in every color," organizers said.
The month-long celebration kicks off Saturday, June 1 at 8 p.m., on the Pier deck and follows with a procession through Downtown to all the installations in the area, before wrapping up at the northern end of the Third Street Promenade.
“We are so excited to see the historic Pier bridge light up in rainbow colors this June," said Negin Singh, executive director of the Santa Monica Pier Corporation.
The celebration, Singh said, "can signify to other cities across the world the importance of standing with the LGBTQ+ community.”
