By Jorge Casuso
January 9, 2019 -- Santa Monica police on Wednesday released a video of a shooting that took place in the parking lot of Eddies Liquor on the night of November 16.
The video -- which police hope will help them capture the shooter -- shows an escalating altercation between the suspect on a bicycle and the male driver and female passenger in a car.
The passenger sustained a superficial wound when she was struck by a bullet shot into the car as it pulled away from the parking lot of the liquor store at the corner of 20th Street and Pico Boulevard.
The video shows a car backing out of a parking space and stopping for a bicyclist. then continuing. The bicyclist pulls up to the driver's side and a confrontation ensues. The driver and passenger then get out.
The female passenger then kicks the bicycle over and returns with the driver to the car. They begin driving away when the suspect pulls a handgun from a saddlebag attached to the bicycle.
"The suspect fired several rounds upwards in the air and at the victim’s vehicle," said Lt. Saul Rodriguez, the Police Department spokesman.
The victims drove to a nearby hospital, where the woman was treated for minor injuries from a bullet strike and released, police said.
The suspect is described as a male White or Hispanic in his 40s, with "long hair in a ponytail, unshaven and wearing a long sleeve flannel shirt at the time of the incident," police said.
He was riding a dark bicycle with rear saddlebags.
"A small white dog was inside one of the saddlebag pouches," police said. "A red food delivery style bag was also attached to the rear of the bicycle."
The incident took place in front of the corner store that was the site of a high-profile gang slaying two decades ago ("Woman Wounded in Shooting at Santa Monica Liquor Store Parking Lot," November 19, 2018).
