Santa Monica Police Search for Serial Arsonist
By Lookout Staff
January 4, 2019 -- Santa Monica police are searching for a suspected arsonist who could be responsible for 15 fires set in trash cans in alleys over the past two weeks.
Eight of the fires were set on December 22 and seven on New Year's Day, according to police.
The fires appear to have been intentionally set near buildings North of Montana Avenue, police said. They have been set at different times of the day.
One frightened resident captured a blaze burning near her home in the 1100 block of 12th Street, according to CBSLA.
“The fact that it could catch to the electric pole or the residential homes nearby is extremely alarming and worrisome and keeps all of us awake at night,” the resident told the station.
There have been no reports of injuries or damage to structures, according to the reports.
Police told KTLA they believe one person set the fires, although there is no description of the suspect.
An arson investigation is underway, police said.
