Santa Monica to Hold Its First ClimateFest
By Lookout Staff
May 11, 2018 -- Speakers, workshops and interactive activities will be featured during Santa Monica's first ClimateFest, a free event held next week at St. Monica’s Campus.
Co-produced by the City in partnership with Climate Action Santa Monica (CASM), the event -- which will take place Saturday May 19 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. -- is meant to inspire residents and businesses to become "sustainability change agents," event organizers said.
"ClimateFest strives to flip the often typical climate change narrative of ‘doom and gloom’ to present climate as something to learn about, engage with, celebrate and honor, and feel empowered to positively impact," said Laura Gillette, a CASM Steering Committee member.
"In addition to the choir, our hope is to attract people from across the community who don’t normally go to 'Climate Summits,'” she said.
The event -- whose keynote speaker is Felicia Marcus, who heads California's Water Boards -- also includes a bicycle hub, green organizations, EV Ride and Drives and free raffle and drawings.
"Attendees will peruse the schedule and design and curate their own personal ClimateFest experience as they are challenged to choose from feast of possible activities," organizers said.
Registration is requested and required to receive free raffle and meal tickets. For more information visit www.climatefestsm.eventbrite.com
“We wish to make it an easy ‘yes’ for people of all stripes to attend ClimateFest, and to engage and learn how anyone can have positive impact by changing a few daily habits,” said CASM Co-Chair Cris Gutierrez.
St. Monica's campus is located at 1030 Lincoln Boulevard across from Reed Park.
ClimateFest attendees are encouraged to bike, walk and use alternative means to arrive at ClimateFest. Fee Valet Bike Parking is available.
