July 6, 2017 -- Santa Monica police are investigating the suspicious death of a man whose body was found on a bench at St. John’s Hospital early Friday morning.

The man -- described as a Caucasian male in his 40s -- had suffered a "blunt force injury," police officials said.

The deceased was discovered by hospital security, who notified hospital staff, said Saul Rodriguez, the Police Department spokesman.

Police responded to a radio call for service at about 6:44 a.m., he said.

"First responding officers determined the death appeared suspicious," Rodriguez said.

SMPD Detectives responded to the scene and conducted a preliminary investigation, he said.

The investigation "revealed the deceased suffered a blunt force injury to his upper torso," Rodriguez said.

Police are seeking the public’s assistance with any information or witnesses related to a incident.

Those with information should call the Santa Monica Police Department at (310) 458-8491.
