Santa Monica College Seeks Applicants for Bond Oversight Committee
By Lookout Staff
December 5, 2018 -- Santa Monica College (SMC) is seeking applicants to serve on the committee that oversees the implementation of four bond measures that fund capital improvements at its campuses, officials announced Wednesday.
The current vacancy on the seven-member committee must be filled by a representative of the local business community in Santa Monica or Malibu, but others are welcome to apply for future openings.
The application deadline is Friday, January 4, 2019. The application form is available at smc.edu/CBOCApp.
Applicants must be at least 18 years old, must not be a college employee or official and must not be a vendor, contractor or consultant to the college, college officials said.
The committee -- which consists of at least seven members -- was established as required by State law to oversee the implementation of Measure U, the $160 million bond approved by 70 percent of Santa Monica-Malibu voters.
The committee’s responsibility was expanded to include oversight of Measure S, the $135 million bond measure passed in 2004; Measure AA, the $295 million bond measure passed in 2008 and Measure V, the $345 million bond measure passed in 2016.
Among the projects funded is a new state-of-the-art math and science buildings on the main campus, a new media and technology complex, a job training building on two of SMC’s satellite campuses and improvements to the main campus' Pico Boulevard entrance.
The bonds also are funding the replacement of 64-year-old Corsair Stadium and is funding ongoing efforts to make the college more sustainable.
Members of the committee are appointed for a two-year term by the Board of Trustees, which will review all applications and make the final appointments.
