September 27, 2017 -- The Santa Monica College Theatre Arts Department will stage a production of the 1995 Broadway hit comedy "Moon Over Buffalo" with a premiere Friday. A preview is scheduled at 8 p.m. Thursday.

Written by Ken Ludwig, the madcap comedy takes place in 1953, when the new medium of television was on the rise, and traces a twisted day in the life of a struggling touring company staging a play in Buffalo.

"Moon Over Buffalo" poster When news that legendary Hollywood director Frannk Capra plans to attend the show in search of new stars for his next movie, everything that can go wrong does. Even the marriage of the aging couple who lead the troupe falls apart.

The play features the fast-paced dialogue and action of a sitcom (Carol Burnett played the lead role on Broadway), and includes fencing, wrestling, pratfalls and mistaken identity.

But the play has a happy ending when Capra calls to say he missed the afternoon performance but will attend the evening show.

Mr. Ludwig, the New York Times legendary theater critic Vincent Canby wrote, "is one of those comparatively rare contemporary playwrights who thinks in terms of old-fashioned, knockabout farce.

"That's something to be cherished and nourished," Canby wrote. "Yet 'Moon Over Buffalo' still seems unfinished."

The play has been revived over the years both in major big city venues and small town stages.

The SMC production is directed by Janie Jones, with fight choreography by Mikael Mattsson.

Show times are 8 p.m. on Friday, September 29 and October 6, and Saturday, September 30 and October 7. Matinees are at 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 1, and on Saturday, October 7, and Sunday, October 8.

Advance tickets range from $12 to $15 ($8 for preview), plus a service charge, and can be purchased by going to www.smc.edu/eventsinfo or by calling (310) 434-4319 or (310) 434-3005 Monday through Friday.
