October 9, 2017 -- Santa Monica Travel & Tourism (SMTT) won a prestigious marketing award for a pop-up rooftop lounge the agency set up near the Tower of London this summer, tourism officials announced last week.
It marked the second consecutive year "Travel Weekly" recognized SMTT with a prestigious Silver Magellan Award in the Destination Marketing – Campaign – Advertising/Marketing category.
“It is an absolute honor to receive this renowned award for our work in the United Kingdom, which has long been one of Santa Monica’s most loyal visitor bases,” said Misti Kerns, CEO/President of Santa Monica Travel & Tourism.
Travel agencies from around the world competed in the awards, which "recognize outstanding design, marketing and services in the travel industry," agency officials said.
SMTT's winning entry, called Santa Monica at SkyLounge," set up the lounge atop the DoubleTree by Hilton London–Tower of London.
"Inspired by Santa Monica’s vibrant cultural scene and oceanfront lifestyle, the pop-up transported guests away from the rush of city life to a relaxing retreat combined with California cool -- making it the ultimate city spot to soak up summer," agency officials said.
“Our beachside community loves welcoming visitors from around the world," Kerns said, "and the immersive Santa Monica at SkyLounge not only provided an opportunity to share the welcoming spirit of Santa Monica in the heart of London, but also allowed our organization to further expand traditional sales and marketing efforts in the region.”
Santa Monica's tourism industry pumped $1.87 billion into the city's economy last year, according to figures released by SMTT officials in May ("Santa Monica Bed Taxes Pumped Nearly $51 Million into City Coffers Last Year, Report Says," May 12, 2017).
The estimated 8.4 million visitors who came to the bayside city last year spent an average of $163 each.
The Magellan Awards honor outstanding design, marketing and services in a broad range of industry segments and are judged and overseen by a one-of-a-kind panel of top travel professionals representing the best names and most accomplished leaders from the industry.
Travel Weekly is "the most influential provider of news, research, opinion and analysis to the North American travel trade marketplace, SMTT officials said.
