By Lookout Staff
June 13, 2017 -- Sana Monica's College's annual “Celebrate America” event -- which includes fireworks and entertainment -- will be held this year on Saturday, June 24, college officials announced Monday.
Picnicking is welcome, but alcoholic beverages, glass containers, barbecues, fireworks (including sparklers) and chairs with pointed legs are prohibited. SMC is a smoke free campus and all smoking is prohibited.
Celebrate America festivities will also feature community service booths, food trucks, and food booths operated by the SMC Veterans’ Center, Big King®, Kettle Corn and Stuff, the Boy Scouts, and others. Though Santa Monica’s Independence day festivities usually take place before the Fourth of July, they have rarely, if ever, been held so far in advance of the anniversary of Congress’ endorsement of the Declaration of Independence.
In fact, on June 27, 1776, Thomas Jefferson had not yet presented the historic document he had drafted, with changes made by Adams and Franklin, to Congress. He would do so the following day.
Parking lots open at 4 p.m. (enter at Pico Boulevard and 17th Street), with Corsair Field gates opening at 5 p.m. Entertainment begins at 7 p.m. The fireworks are scheduled at 9 p.m. and will last approximately 17 minutes.
