Santa Monica Library Heads Back to the Beach
By Lookout Staff
July 3, 2017 -- For the third year in a row, the Santa Monica Public Library is heading back to the beach this summer when it launches "SMPL at the Beach 2017" this week.
The series of four seaside pop-up libraries at the Annenberg Community Beach House and at Dorothy Green Park kicks off Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the beach house at 415 Pacific Coast Highway.
"Librarians will be on-hand to sign out books from our curated collection of beach reads (no library card required), give personalized reading recommendations and demonstrate cutting edge library apps, eBooks and streaming media," library officials said.
Visitors to the "pop-up" libraries also can enjoy a variety of "family-friendly, beach-themed activities" that include Seaside Story Time, nautical crafts, ukulele lessons, hula hooping, and hands-on, interactive environmental education, library officials said.
Those who want to relax in the shade can visit the Surfside Reading Lounge or participate in games such as bocce and ladder toss. Each pop-up also features a "unique, limited edition SMPL at the Beach giveaway," organizers said.
The series continues Saturday, July 15, at Dorothy Green Park, where Ocean Park Boulevard ends, and on Friday, August 11 at the Annenberg Community Beach House. It ends Saturday, August 26 at Dorothy Green Park.
Temporary seaside libraries have been popping up up on beaches across the world, including Bulgaria, Israel, Australia and Spain, according to the book "Atlas Obscura."
The trend started in France 13 years ago as part of an effort to disseminate books across the country during summer months at mini-libraries.
SMPL at the Beach is produced by Community & Cultural Services and the Santa Monica Public Library and funded by Friends of the Santa Monica Public Library.
