June 9, 2016 -- Santa Monica College brings its academic year to a formal close next week with commencement ceremonies that include remarks from Loyola Marymount University President Timothy Law Snyder and the awarding of a record number of degrees and certificates to its students.

SMC’s commencement ceremony is at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Corsair Field, which is east of 16th Street and west of the Kinesiology faculty offices. The campus is at 1900 Pico Boulevard.

This year, 4,242 students are receiving a total of 5,197 degrees and certificates, a record for SMC, officials said.

About 650 students are expected to attend the event, which also will be webcast live for the seventh year and made available at the SMC Alumni Association webpage (www.alumni.smc.edu).

Also during the event, the Santa Monica Community College District Board of

Loyola Marymount University President Timothy Law Snyder
Trustees will conduct the investiture of Kathryn E. Jeffery, the college’s new superintendent and president. Jeffrey is also receiving the Presidential Medallion “as a symbol of her authority and responsibilities to the College,” a spokesperson said.

Jeffrey said she was excited to welcome Snyder as the commencement speaker and noted that SMC is one of the top feeders of transfer students for Loyola Marymount University.

“SMC sends more students to LMU than any other community college,” she said. “Dr. Snyder is accomplished in so many different arenas, and it is admirable to see how he engages his creative side and his passion for student success to lead one of the best universities in the nation.”

Although SMC has a quarter-century record for sending transfer students to the University at California system, it also sees many students head to LMU and USC, both in Los Angeles.

SMC enrollment has been stable at slightly over 30,000, with about a third of the students registered fulltime. As of last year, two-thirds of its students transferred to other colleges and universities.

Records also show that, for the most part, the number of students receiving program degrees and certificates has been rising over the last five years.

A total of 2,686 degrees and certificates were awarded in the 2010-2011 year, compared to 3,738 in 2014-2015, the college’s data indicates.

Also during next week’s commencement ceremonies, two winners of this year’s Santa Monica College Distinguished Alumni Recognition Award will be recognized, said SMC spokesperson Grace Smith.

They are Republic of Zambia Vice President Inonge Mutukwa Wina and renowned feminist media critic Anita Sarkeesian.
