July 1, 2016 -- After a 16-year absence, former Santa Monica High School principal Sylvia Rousseau is returning to the local school district. She was appointed co-interim superintendent on Wednesday.

Sharing the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District's top post will be Christopher King, who most recently served as an interim superintendent in Anaheim and interim high school principal in Ramona.

“I feel honored to be able to serve in Santa Monica and Malibu, and I am excited about continuing the tradition of excellence here,” King said in a statement. “The people I have met are amazing, and I can't wait to get started.”

The contracts for Rousseau and King are in effect through December 31, according to District officials.

A timeline for hiring an official superintendent includes the new person beginning work in January (“Santa Monica-Malibu School District Starts Search for New Superintendent,” June 16, 2016).

Rousseau was the Samohi principal from 1993 to 2000. Since that time, she has had various roles in the Los Angeles Unified School District, including serving as a superintendent for a local district within the LAUSD, as well as other jobs in education.

“We welcome Dr. King and Dr. Rousseau to SMMUSD as co-interim superintendents,” Board President Laurie Lieberman said in a statement.

She continued, “We are fortunate to have Dr. King during this transition who has many years of superintendent experience in a large, diverse school district, and Dr. Rousseau, who brings a wealth of academic and school district leadership experience, as we move forward with the equity plan started under the leadership of Sandra Lyon.”

Lyon’s official final day as superintendent was Thursday. She announced her resignation last month after five years on the job . Lyon will head the Palm Springs Unified School District. (“Santa Monica-Malibu Schools Superintendent to Leave Post,” May 3, 2016)

Also on Wednesday, the board appointed Mark Kelly as interim deputy superintendent.

He has been the SMMUSD's assistant superintendent of human resources since last year and has had various district roles before that, including Malibu High principal and briefly as Samohi’s co-principal.
