December 15, 2016 -- Santa Monica's historic Miles Playhouse will host a performance series next moth that features jazz, dance, comedy and stories, City officials announced this week.

Launched in 2010, the series at the 1929 structure seeks to "reignite the Playhouse’s large period fireplace as a community gathering space for the arts as it was in the 1930s and 40s," Cultural Affairs officials said.

The performances take place in an "intimate" historic setting that offers couches, candles, and a coffee and tea bar, officials said.

The series kicks off January 7 with a performance by Nick Mancini Trio, featuring selections from the band leader and vibraphone player's new CD.

Other performances next month feature the Los Angeles Flute Orchestra on Friday, January 13, followed the next evening by a performance of solo vocal music hosted by Tom Keyes of the A Capella troupe “Frequency.”

The flute orchestra will return January 21 for a performance that features the Taiko Drum group “On Ensemble,” followed by SHINE Storytelling on January 27 and an acoustic string performance by EnsembleFret.

February performers include Jazz artist Natalie Jacob and her band on February 3 and a return of the Angela Todaro Dance Company on February 4.

The month also features a night of comedy, a jazz performance by the Greg Poree Band featuring the band leader on guitar, a classical performance by the Santa Monica Woodwind Quintet and a senior talent show.

The series concludes February 24 and 25 with a "unique and powerful performance" by local choreographer Suchi Branfman & Friends, officials said.

Tickets are $10 for general admission and $5 for those 18 and under, 55 and over and students of any age. The doors open at 7:30 p.m. and shows run from 8 to 10 p.m. Seating is general admission.
