August 16, 2016 -- Various forms of theft accounted for more than one-third of the reported crimes in Santa Monica in the first half of this year, according to the Santa Monica Open Data Portal.

A total of 1,476 thefts were reported, the most of any crime. The most frequent type of theft report was items stolen from cars with 492.

Theft was also the most reported Santa Monica crime in the first half of last year with 1,565. Items stolen from vehicles was also the most frequently reported type of theft with 426.

Other types of theft reported in the first halves of this year and 2015 included the following:

* stolen bicycles (206 this year and 294 in 2015),
* “other” (191 this year and 192 in 2015),
* items stolen from buildings (190 this year and 199 in 2015),
* grand theft auto (144 this year and 132 in 2015),
* shoplifting (149 this year and 177 in 2015),
* stolen vehicle parts (67 this year and 117 in 2015),
* pick pocketing (29 this year and 17 in 2015),
* purse snatching (four this year and seven in 2015) and
* theft from coin machines (four in both years).

The numbers reported in the Open Data Portal are based on the Santa Monica Police Department’s crime and incident reports. They do not reflect whether the reported crimes led to convictions or even further investigation.

There have been two reported homicides this year.

Rudell James Jr., 35, was stabbed to death on April 5 inside an apartment at Step Up on 5th, a downtown building that provides housing for people experiencing chronic homelessness, mental health issues and addictions.

Delshone Tyrrell Busby, 27, was arrested later that month and charged with murder. He pleaded not guilty. Another man was also arrested, but prosecutors declined to charge him, according to published reports.

The other reported homicide took place in June. Navy SEAL Theo Andrew Krah has been charged with murdering 57-year-old Kris Anderson.

Anderson's body was found on the 1300 block of 5th Street, about an hour after police had been called to break up an altercation between Krah and Anderson on the Santa Monica Pier (“Police Arrest Suspect in Santa Monica’s Second Homicide of the Year,” June 16, 2016).

Second on the most-reported crimes list for the first half of the year was assault with 479 reported incidents. This is an increase from 420 reported in the first half of last year.

The vast majority of the reported assaults in both years were classified as “simple,” with 374 reported in the first half of this year and 325 reported the first half of 2015. The remaining types of assault were classified as “aggravated.”

Public intoxication was the third-most reported crime in the first halves of both years, with 332 this year and 396 in 2015.

Other top reported crimes in the first halves of both years included the following:

* vandalism (245 this year and 387 in 2015),
* burglary (242 this year and 290 in 2015),
* fraud (298 this year and 319 in 2015),
* contempt of court (144 this year and 135 in 2015),
* DUI (122 this year and 101 in 2015) and
* robbery (84 this year and 88 in 2015).

Reported drug possession crimes are up from 107 in the first half of 2015 to 148 so far this year. Possession of “synthetic” drugs was the most commonly reported in both years, including 101 this year.

Reported drug sales is up from 13 in the first half of 2015 to 30 so far this year.

Other reported incidents of note from the first halves of both years included blackmail or extortion (three this year and none in 2015), prostitution (one this year and two in 2015), arson (11 this year and 13 in 2015) and liquor law violations (16 this year and 20 in 2015).
